Land Use Planning on the
Big Hole River

In February 2009, the BHWC Land Use working group decided to initiate a community-wide discussion about the long-term management of the Big Hole corridor. The group discussed the need to frame the issue in a manner that stressed the importance of resource protection, as well as investigating solutions and strategies that are flexible, offer landowners alternatives, and produce the desired resource protections. The group agreed that the initiative process should follow a format of:
- Education forums;
- Distribution of information and solicitation of responses;
- Investigation and generation of solutions which could include: more forums or a conference or workshop;
- Bringing the best solutions supported by the community to decision-makers.
Long-Term Goals
- Change the community vision on importance of watersheds and corridors,
- Long-term planning for new residents and impacts on river system,
- Incentives for landowners to practice sustainable land-management
